Common problems
Commercial Garbage Disposal Problems We Fix
-
Hums and will not turn
Likely cause: A humming motor usually means the grinding plate is jammed. In a dish room the cause is often a fork, a bottle cap or a bone that slipped past the scrap table.
-
Trips the overload
Likely cause: If the reset button pops again and again, the motor is often overheating from a jam, worn bearings or a failing start part. On three-phase units, a lost phase can do it as well.
-
Water leaks underneath
Likely cause: Leaks under the unit often come from the shaft seal, which wears with heavy use. A loose mounting ring or a cracked drain fitting can also drip onto the floor.
-
Drains slowly or backs up
Likely cause: When the grinding parts are worn, the waste leaves in large pieces and can clog the drain line. Low water flow into the cone during grinding can cause the same backup.
-
Loud grinding or rattling
Likely cause: A new metal-on-metal noise can be a loose object in the chamber. It can also point to a worn bearing or a grinding ring that has come loose.
-
Nothing happens at the switch
Likely cause: A unit that is fully dead often has a failed control box, a bad start switch or a tripped breaker. The water solenoid can fail apart from the motor, so some units run dry or not at all.
What we work on
Commercial Garbage Disposal Types We Repair
Commercial disposers are larger than home units and most have a separate control box, a water solenoid and a motor built to run for long stretches.
- Dish table and scrap sink disposers
- Cone-mounted disposers with a water inlet
- Prep sink disposers
- Small disposers in office break rooms
- Three-phase high-horsepower units
- Disposers with a control panel and auto water
Our process
How a Commercial Visit Works
-
A few questions first
We ask what hours your dish room runs and where the disposer is mounted, such as under a dish table, in a prep sink or in a break room. It helps to know the motor size and if the unit has its own control panel.
-
Motor, controls and water
The technician checks the three things a commercial disposer needs to work: a free-turning motor, a control that starts it, and water flowing while it grinds. The drain connection is checked for leaks too.
-
Cost before any work
We tell you what is wrong and what it will cost to repair before we start. If replacing the unit makes more sense than fixing it, we say so and you choose.
-
Repair and wet test
After the repair, the unit is run with water and checked for leaks, noise and steady draining. We make sure the staff who use it know where the reset and the stop switch are.

Questions
Commercial Garbage Disposal Repair Questions
Can the dish area keep running while the disposer is out?
In most kitchens, yes, if staff scrape plates into a bin and the sink still drains. If water is backing up or leaking onto the floor, stop using that sink until it is checked.
What should staff keep out of a commercial disposer?
Silverware, glass, plastic wrap, shells, large bones and big loads of fibrous peels cause most jams. Grease is a problem too, since it cools and coats the drain line further down.
Is it safe for staff to reach in and clear a jam?
No. Hands should never go into the chamber, even with the switch off. Turn the unit off, post a note so nobody starts it, and call us.
Do you work on the large units in hotel and cafeteria dish rooms?
Yes. We repair the big dish table disposers as well as the small ones in office break rooms. Send a photo of the label to Optimalappliance.company@gmail.com or read it to us on the phone so we know the size and power supply.

I am very pleased with this company’s performance and their tech, Isa, was very kind and respectful. He was knowledgeable and very quick to get started and courteous with his work. He cleaned up everything after, I couldn’t even tell that he moved the washer. The machine is fixed and working perfectly. Thank you so much!

Taghi was so very helpful to my family! Our washing machine was full of water and I tried everything I could think of, but I could not get the water to drain. Taghi was at my house in less than two hours. He found the problem right away, made the repairs, and cleaned everything up. All of this was on a Saturday! I am so very thankful! I promptly put Optimal Appliance Repair’s number in my phone for my next appliance emergency!
