Common problems
Commercial Vent Hood Problems We Fix
-
Fan will not start
Likely cause: A hood fan that does nothing at the switch often has a tripped breaker, a failed motor starter or a burned-out motor. On the roof, a disconnect switch left off after other work is another common cause.
-
Smoke rolls out the front
Likely cause: If smoke escapes the hood edge, the fan is usually moving less air than it should. A slipping or broken belt, clogged filters or a make-up air unit that has quit can all do this.
-
Loud rattle or squeal
Likely cause: A squeal on start-up usually points to a loose or worn belt. A rattle or rumble can mean worn fan bearings or grease buildup that has thrown the wheel off balance.
-
Kitchen doors hard to open
Likely cause: When the exhaust fan runs but the make-up air fan does not, the kitchen is pulled into a vacuum. Doors get heavy, pilots can blow out, and the dining room can feel drafty.
-
Hood lights are out
Likely cause: Hood light fixtures live in heat and grease, and their sockets, globes and wiring often fail. A dark cook line makes it hard for staff to see what they are doing.
-
Fan runs but feels weak
Likely cause: A fan that turns backward after an electrical repair still moves some air, just far less. A worn belt, a loose pulley or a blocked duct can also cut the airflow.
What we work on
Commercial Vent Hood Types We Repair
A commercial hood is one part of a system that also includes the duct, the exhaust fan on the roof or wall, and often a second fan that brings fresh air back in.
- Wall canopy hoods over a cook line
- Island and double-island canopy hoods
- Low backshelf hoods
- Rooftop upblast exhaust fans
- Make-up air units and supply fans
- Heat and steam hoods over dish machines and ovens
Our process
How a Commercial Visit Works
-
What we need to know
We ask for your opening hours, which hood has the fault, and where its fan is, such as on the roof or an outside wall. Tell us how the roof is reached, since a locked hatch or a landlord's key can hold up a visit.
-
From the switch to the fan
The technician follows the system from the wall control to the motor, checking power, the starter, the belt, the bearings and the fan wheel. The make-up air side is checked as well, since the two fans work as a pair.
-
You approve the repair
We show you what failed, with photos from the roof if that is where the problem is, and give you the cost before work starts. The choice to proceed is yours.
-
Repair and airflow check
With the new parts fitted, the fans are run and we check direction, belt tension and noise. Then we light the line with your staff and confirm that smoke is being pulled up into the hood.

Questions
Commercial Vent Hood Repair Questions
Can we keep cooking if the hood fan is down?
You should not cook under a hood that is not pulling air. Heat, smoke and fumes from gas equipment build up fast. Shut that line down and call us.
Do you clean hoods and ducts?
No. Grease cleaning of the hood, duct and fan is done by a hood cleaning company. We repair the mechanical and electrical parts, such as motors, belts, bearings, switches and lights.
Do you work on the fire suppression system in the hood?
No. The suppression system is serviced by a fire protection company. If the fan fault seems tied to that system, we will tell you so you can call the right people.
Our building is leased. Who needs to be involved?
Roof fans often sit on the landlord's part of the building. It helps to let your property manager know we are coming and to arrange roof access ahead of time.

I am very pleased with this company’s performance and their tech, Isa, was very kind and respectful. He was knowledgeable and very quick to get started and courteous with his work. He cleaned up everything after, I couldn’t even tell that he moved the washer. The machine is fixed and working perfectly. Thank you so much!

Taghi was so very helpful to my family! Our washing machine was full of water and I tried everything I could think of, but I could not get the water to drain. Taghi was at my house in less than two hours. He found the problem right away, made the repairs, and cleaned everything up. All of this was on a Saturday! I am so very thankful! I promptly put Optimal Appliance Repair’s number in my phone for my next appliance emergency!
