Common problems

Vent Hood Problems We Fix

  • Fan will not start

Likely cause: A blower motor that has burned out is the usual suspect. A worn speed switch or a failed control board can also keep a good motor from getting power.

  • Weak pull, lingering smoke

Likely cause: Grease-soaked filters choke the airflow more than most people expect. Past the filters, a damper flap stuck shut or a crushed duct can block the path to the outside.

  • Rattling or loud hum

Likely cause: The blower wheel can work loose on its shaft or get heavy with grease and wobble. Dry motor bearings and loose duct joints make their own kinds of noise too.

  • Lights are out

Likely cause: If new bulbs do not help, the socket, the light switch or the small power supply that feeds LED lamps has often failed.

  • Downdraft stays down

Likely cause: A pop-up vent uses a lift motor and position switches. When the motor wears out, a switch fails or something falls into the track, the vent can stop halfway or not move.

  • Buttons do not answer

Likely cause: Steam and grease can work their way behind a touch panel over time. The panel or the board behind it usually needs replacing when keys stop responding or the hood turns on by itself.

Our process

How a Vent Hood Repair Visit Works

  1. Before we come out

Tell us the style of hood, whether it vents outside, and which part has quit: fan, lights, controls or the lift. With that, we set up a visit and a 2-hour arrival window.

  2. Checking air and power

The technician removes the filters, runs the fan at each speed and looks at the blower, damper and duct connection. Switches, wiring and the control board are tested to see where the power stops.

  3. Your decision on the repair

We show you the failed part and tell you the cost to repair it. Work begins only after you agree.

  4. New part in, airflow checked

After the repair, we run every fan speed, try each light and make sure the damper opens and closes freely. On a downdraft, we raise and lower it several times.

Vent Hood Repair Across Houston

Humid air is hard on a vent hood. In Houston, a damper that sticks open lets warm, damp outdoor air drift back down the duct, which can cause drips from the hood and makes the air conditioner work harder. Many ducts here run through a hot attic, so grease inside them softens and collects dust faster. Frying and high-heat cooking load the filters quickly as well. Hoods over patio grills and outdoor kitchens face rain and damp air all year, and their switches and motors tend to corrode sooner.

Questions

Vent Hood Repair Questions

How often should I clean the filters?

For most households, washing metal grease filters about once a month is a good habit, and more often if you fry a lot. Many metal filters can go in the dishwasher; check your owner's guide. Charcoal filters in recirculating hoods cannot be washed and need to be replaced.

Why is water dripping from my hood?

It is usually condensation. Warm, moist air meets a cooler duct and turns to water, or humid outdoor air comes in past a damper that does not close. A technician can check the damper and the duct run to find the source.

Is it safe to cook while the fan is broken?

You can cook for a short time, but smoke, steam and grease will stay in the kitchen. Open a window if you can and avoid heavy frying. If the hood sparks, smells of burning or trips a breaker, leave it off until it has been looked at.

My hood is very loud but still moves air. Should I worry?

A sudden change in sound is worth a call. It often means the blower wheel is loose or the motor bearings are wearing, and both get worse with use. Fixing it early can save the motor.
