Common problems

Fireplace Problems We Fix

  • Pilot will not stay lit

Likely cause: The small sensor that sits in the pilot flame is often dirty or worn, so the gas valve shuts off to be safe. Dust in the pilot opening or a draft can also put the flame out.

  • Burner will not come on

Likely cause: If the pilot is lit but the main burner stays off, the cause is usually a weak signal from the flame sensor, a wall switch or a gas valve. Loose or corroded wiring can do the same thing.

  • Remote or switch does nothing

Likely cause: Dead batteries in the remote or in the receiver box are the most common cause. When fresh batteries do not help, the receiver or the control module can be at fault.

  • Soot on logs or glass

Likely cause: Black soot often means the flame is not getting enough air or the logs have shifted out of place. It should be checked, because a clean-burning gas flame leaves very little soot.

  • Weak or uneven flame

Likely cause: Burner ports can clog with dust, rust or insect nests after a long time without use. Low gas pressure to the unit can also make the flame small or patchy.

  • Electric unit gives no heat

Likely cause: When the flame effect works but the air stays cool, the heater element, the fan or a safety cutoff is usually involved. A tripped breaker is worth checking first.

Our process

How a Fireplace Repair Visit Works

  1. Book the visit

Tell us if the fireplace is gas or electric, how it is controlled and what happens when you try to start it. We give you a 2-hour arrival window and confirm by phone or email.

  2. Inspection and testing

The technician checks the pilot, burner, sensors, controls and wiring, and looks for leaks at the gas parts of the unit. On an electric fireplace we test the heater, fan and controls.

  3. Clear answer first

You hear what is wrong and what it will cost before we start the repair. Nothing is done until you say yes.

  4. Fix and safe start-up

We make the repair, set the logs back where they belong, and light the fireplace several times to be sure it starts and shuts off as it should. We check the flame and the glass before we leave.

Fireplace Repair Across Houston

In Houston most fireplaces sit unused for ten or eleven months of the year. During that time dust settles in the pilot, spiders build webs in the burner, and damp Gulf air can corrode small parts and battery contacts. Then the first cold front arrives and the fireplace will not light. It helps to try your fireplace on a mild day in the fall, so you know about a problem before the night you need the heat.

Questions

Fireplace Repair Questions

Do you clean chimneys or repair brick?

No. We work on the gas and electric parts of the fireplace, such as burners, pilots, valves, switches and heaters. For chimney sweeping or masonry you would need a chimney company.

Is it normal to smell something when I first light it each season?

A light dusty smell for a short time is common, because dust burns off the logs and burner. A gas smell is different and is never normal. If you smell gas, shut the fireplace off if you can do it safely, leave, and follow the safety steps on this page.

Should I leave the pilot on all year?

That depends on your fireplace and what its owner's manual says. Many people in Houston turn the pilot off for the warm months, while others leave it on to keep moisture and insects out. We can talk through what suits your unit during the visit.

Can I use the fireplace while I wait for the repair?

If it will not light, goes out by itself, makes soot or smells of gas, leave it off until it has been checked. A working carbon monoxide alarm in the home is a good idea any time you have gas equipment.
