Smell gas? Leave first, then call

If you smell gas at the grill, step away, do not light it, and do not use switches or any flame nearby. Close the propane tank valve only if it is safe to reach, call your gas utility or 911 from a safe place, and then call us for the repair.

Common problems

Outdoor Grill Problems We Fix

  • Burner will not light

Likely cause: A worn igniter, a dead igniter battery or a cracked electrode wire is often the reason. Burner openings blocked by grease or rust can also stop the gas from catching.

  • Low flame, low heat

Likely cause: On propane grills the regulator can go into a low-flow safety mode, which keeps every burner weak. A failing regulator, a kinked hose or a nearly empty tank can cause the same thing.

  • Hot and cold spots

Likely cause: Uneven heat usually comes from burners that are partly clogged or rusted through. Worn heat plates above the burners can also let some areas run much hotter than others.

  • Yellow or orange flames

Likely cause: A healthy flame is mostly blue. Yellow flames often mean the gas and air mix is off, which can happen when insects nest in the burner tubes or the air shutters shift.

  • Frequent flare-ups

Likely cause: Grease that has built up on heat plates and in the firebox is the usual cause. Damaged heat plates can also let drippings fall straight onto the burners.

  • Igniter clicks, no spark

Likely cause: Moisture, grease on the electrode tip or a loose wire can keep the spark from jumping. On older grills the igniter module itself is often worn out.

Our process

How a Outdoor Grill Repair Visit Works

  1. Describe the grill

Let us know if it is built-in or freestanding, propane or natural gas, and what it does when you try to cook. We schedule a 2-hour arrival window and confirm the visit by phone or email.

  2. Burner-by-burner check

The technician tests each burner, the igniters, the regulator, the hose and the valves, and checks the gas parts for leaks. We also look at heat plates and the firebox for rust and grease damage.

  3. Your call

We show you what has failed and tell you the cost before any work begins. You choose whether to repair it.

  4. Repair and test fire

After the repair we light every burner, check the flame color and heat across the grate, and repeat the leak check. You get a short rundown of what was done before we go.

Outdoor Grill Repair Across Houston

A grill in Houston lives outside in heavy humidity, hard rain and, closer to the bay, salt in the air. That mix rusts burners, heat plates and igniter parts sooner than in a dry climate, even on stainless steel grills. Because the weather allows grilling most of the year, grease also builds up without a long break for a deep clean. A fitted cover, a dry grill before you cover it, and a look at the burners every few months go a long way.

Questions

Outdoor Grill Repair Questions

Do you work on built-in grills in outdoor kitchens?

Yes. We repair built-in grills, side burners and sear burners that are set into stone or cabinet islands, as well as grills on carts. Tell us how the grill is installed so the technician knows what to expect.

Do you repair both propane and natural gas grills?

Yes, we work on both. When you call, let us know which fuel your grill uses, because the regulator and some parts are different.

Do I need to clean the grill before the visit?

A basic brush of the grates is helpful but not required. Please make sure the grill is cool, the cover is off and there is clear space to stand around it. If it runs on propane, a tank with fuel in it lets us test the repair.

Is rust on my grill a reason to stop using it?

Surface rust on grates or the outside is mostly a cosmetic issue. Rust that has eaten holes in burners, or a hose that is cracked or brittle, is a reason to stop and have the grill checked before you light it again.
