Common problems

Cooktop Problems We Fix

  • Burner will not light

Likely cause: On a gas cooktop, food spills often clog the burner ports or coat the igniter tip. A cracked igniter or a failed spark module can also stop the spark.

  • Clicking will not stop

Likely cause: Constant clicking usually means moisture or grease has reached an igniter switch under a knob. It can also be a spark module that is stuck on.

  • Element stays cold

Likely cause: On an electric cooktop, the radiant element under the glass can burn out. The switch behind the knob, called the infinite switch, is another common failure.

  • Only heats on high

Likely cause: A burner that is either off or full blast often has a worn infinite switch. On a gas cooktop, a damaged valve can make the flame hard to turn down.

  • Induction will not sense pan

Likely cause: Induction needs cookware that a magnet sticks to. If the right pan is still not detected, the coil, its sensor or the power board under that zone may have failed.

  • Weak or yellow flame

Likely cause: A low, uneven or yellow flame can mean blocked burner ports or a burner cap that is not seated. It can also be a gas pressure issue that needs a proper check.

What we work on

Cooktop Types We Repair

Each kind heats the pan in its own way, so the parts that fail on a gas cooktop are not the ones that fail on induction.

  • Gas cooktops
  • Electric coil cooktops
  • Smooth glass radiant cooktops
  • Induction cooktops
  • Downdraft cooktops

Our process

How a Cooktop Repair Visit Works

  1. What we ask up front

Tell us the type of cooktop, which burners or zones are affected, and whether the fault is constant or comes and goes.

  2. Burner by burner check

The technician tests each burner or zone in turn. On gas, that means the spark, the flame and the valves. On electric and induction, it means the elements, switches and boards.

  3. The cost comes first

You get a plain explanation of the fault and the cost to put it right before we touch a part. Going ahead is up to you.

  4. Repair and heat test

After the repair, every burner is lit or powered and run from low to high. On glass cooktops we check that the hot surface light works too.

Cooktop Repair Across Houston

Kitchens here deal with a lot of moisture in the air, and that moisture finds its way into gas igniters and the switches under the knobs. It is one reason burners click on their own after a deep clean or a very humid day. Storm season brings power surges, and the electronic boards in induction and touch-control cooktops can be damaged by them. Some homes in the area use propane instead of natural gas, so tell us which fuel you have.

Questions

Cooktop Repair Questions

My glass cooktop is cracked. Can I still use it?

Please do not. A crack can let liquid reach the live parts below and the glass can break further when heated. Turn the cooktop off at the breaker and have it looked at.

Why does my gas burner click after I clean it?

Water has likely reached the igniter or the switch. It often stops once everything dries out fully. If the clicking goes on for more than a day, a switch or the spark module may need to be replaced.

How do I know if my pans work with induction?

Hold a fridge magnet to the bottom of the pan. If it sticks firmly, the pan should work. If it slides off, the cooktop will not heat that pan.

Do you repair a range on the same kind of visit?

Yes. A range is a cooktop and oven in one unit, and it has its own page on this site. Let us know which you have when you call.
