Common problems

Garbage Disposal Problems We Fix

  • Hums but will not spin

Likely cause: The motor has power, yet the grinding plate is stuck. A fruit pit, a bone or a bit of metal wedged at the edge is usually to blame, though a seized bearing can sound just the same.

  • Completely dead

Likely cause: The overload button on the bottom of the unit may have popped, or the breaker may be off. If both are fine, the wall switch, the wiring or the motor itself can be at fault.

  • Water under the sink

Likely cause: Where the drip starts tells the story. A leak at the top often points to the sink flange seal, one at the side to a hose or drain pipe joint, and one from the bottom usually means the inner seal has worn out.

  • Sink drains slowly

Likely cause: Grease and ground food can pack into the trap or the pipe past it. Dull grinding parts make it worse because the pieces going down the drain are too big.

  • Loud rattle or grinding

Likely cause: A bottle cap, a coin or a piece of glass can bounce around inside the chamber. If nothing is in there, loose mounting hardware or worn bearings are often behind the noise.

  • Reset keeps popping

Likely cause: A motor that overheats shuts itself off to stay safe. When it happens again and again, the motor is usually working too hard against a jam or is near the end of its life.

Our process

How a Garbage Disposal Repair Visit Works

  1. A few questions by phone

We ask what the disposal does when you flip the switch: silence, a hum or a bad noise. We also ask if there is water in the cabinet and if a dishwasher drains through it. Then we set a day and a 2-hour arrival window.

  2. Looking above and below the sink

The technician cuts the power first, then checks the chamber for a jam and the cabinet for leaks. The switch, the cord, the mount and the drain joints are each tested in turn.

  3. Repair or replace, your call

Some disposals can be freed and resealed. Others, such as one with a cracked body or a burned motor, are better replaced. We lay out both options and tell you the cost before any work starts.

  4. Run it with water

With the work done, we run water through the unit and watch every joint for drips. If you have a dishwasher, we check that it drains through the disposal without backing up.

Garbage Disposal Repair Across Houston

Water in the Houston area tends to be on the hard side, and the minerals it carries build up as scale inside a disposal over the years. That scale can stiffen the moving parts and wear the seals. Warm, humid kitchens also mean food left in the chamber starts to smell quickly, so a long rinse with cold water after each use helps. Big cookouts and holiday meals are when we hear about jams most, often from grease, shells or stringy peels.

Questions

Garbage Disposal Repair Questions

Is there anything safe I can try before I call?

Yes, two things. Check that the breaker is on, then press the small reset button on the bottom of the unit and try the switch again. Never reach into the disposal, even with the switch off.

What should not go down a disposal?

Keep out grease, bones, fruit pits, shells, coffee grounds in large amounts and stringy foods such as celery and corn husks. These either jam the plate or pack the drain pipe. Run cold water while you grind and for a little while after.

Why does my dishwasher back up into the sink?

The dishwasher often drains through the side of the disposal. If the disposal is clogged, the dirty water has nowhere to go and comes up in the sink. Clearing the disposal and the drain hose usually solves it.

How do I know if it needs replacing and not repairing?

A jam, a loose joint or a bad switch can usually be repaired. A leak from the bottom of the unit, a cracked housing or a motor that has burned out usually means a new disposal makes more sense. The technician will show you what was found so you can choose.
